Relax 04/18_Coming on stage

April 11, 2018

This square is much more than an open space where people of an incredible diversity – seen nowhere else in Luxemburg – pass by. It is like a stage in theatre, as you enter it from one of four streets or parts of streets, each with a very specific atmosphere, to encounter people from other streets with very different social backgrounds. And the café „Le Relax“ is our perfect basis to experience this. We and the other guests, sipping an Espresso or a Cognac for an hour or two are the spectators within this special stage, being surprised every minute or two by another personality crossing it.

The situation is new: it is the first day in spring that we’re able to sit out on the terrace again after a long winter that only allowed us to watch people passing by through the grey windows. In a mood to try some street-photography we observed the scenery for the first time through the lenses of our cameras on a rainy day in january. So there was quite a contrast to that first experience when we met again last monday.

Some people passing by know those sitting on the terrace and greet them, others don’t.

I had just started reading the german translation of her book „Migrating the Feminine“ from the egyptian actress and dancer Nora Amin, in which she describes what changes in personal perception of your body happen, when you leave your internal space to go out in the external world – especially in the experience of women, and above all for women with a free individuality entering a situation of rigid social control of your outer appearance. In Luxemburg the situation is different, but I watched this entering on scene through the filter of what I had understood by this book „Weiblichkeit im Aufbruch“.

Whereas some people entering the square are conscious of this situation, others are not. Some stage themselves especially with their dressing, other people generally rely on their self confidence and aren’t interested in what the spectators associate when seeing them. They have in common that they at least have a slight conscience that they’re exposed here on this public, but small square.

I was especially surprised by some people dressing for the gallery in a way I wouldn’t dare. Others were here as private persons that play another role in the night, when the surrounding streets are full of prostitutes, junkies and dealers.

I’ll sure continue observing that situation and taking that kind of pictures.
